Multiplication Tables Check (MTC): Information for Parents
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment for pupils in Year 4 in England. It is designed to ensure that children have a secure understanding of their multiplication tables up to 12 × 12, which is a key foundation for later maths learning.
What is the Multiplication Tables Check?
The MTC is an online assessment where children are asked to answer 25 multiplication questions. They have 6 seconds to answer each question, with a short pause between questions. The check is designed to be quick and low-pressure, helping teachers identify which pupils may need additional support.
Why is it important?
Fluency in multiplication tables supports many areas of mathematics, including division, fractions, and problem-solving. By mastering these facts early, children can approach more complex maths with confidence.
How will the school support your child?
- Regular practice of times tables in class
- Use of engaging tools and activities to build recall speed
- Opportunities to become familiar with the format of the check
How can parents help at home?
- Encourage regular, short practice sessions
- Use games, apps, or quizzes to make learning fun
- Focus on accuracy first, then speed
- Praise effort and progress to build confidence
