World Book Day 2nd March

World Book Day will be a non-school uniform day. If you would like, you can dress up as your
favourite book character

Whole School Book Swap

At the end of the day school council will be holding a book swap event in the hall. If you have
any unwanted books (we will be having an adult section as well), please bring them in with your
child in the morning. Mr Copping will then sort them and after school you will have the
opportunity to come into school and choose new books to take away.
Any books left over after the event will be boxed up and sent to the charity Books2Africa as
part of their ‘readcycling’ project and to improve the quality of education in Africa. So
please dig out those old books and give them a new home.

World Book Day books

Our local bookshop, Little Toller Books (https://www.littletoller.co.uk/little-toller-
bookshop/) are kindly providing our free books this year. Every child will be able to choose a
book to take home on the day.

Extreme Reading for World Book Day!

What are you going to read for World Book Day?
Over the next few weeks, we will be running a competition to find the weirdest and most
wonderful place you can read your favourite book. To enter, you need to take a photograph or
draw a picture of yourself reading in the most interesting place you can find. For example, on
your scooter, up a tree, or you could even try reading upside down!
To enter, please have your photographs or drawings ready by Wednesday 1st March. You can
either print out your photographs and bring them in to Miss Nash or email them to
fnash@mosterton.dorset.sch.uk.

Mr Smith will announce the winners on World Book Day, and there will be a prize for the best
entry in KS1 and KS2.

Good luck and happy reading.

Tree Planting Bonanza

8.12.22 – In the middle of November we held tree planting sessions in school. Every child was given the opportunity to plant a tree somewhere in our school grounds.
Local Tree Expert, Pete Rothman, who has years of experience planting trees in schools with children, came in to help us over two days.
We now have a spectacular new hedgerow to look after in our forest school area and lots of new Rowan, Silver Birch and Cherry Trees planted in and around the school grounds.
The children worked extremely hard and really enjoyed learning about the importance of planting trees. They were so proud of their achievements and of the idea that the trees will be on the school grounds for years to come. It was a really special couple of days as you will hopefully see by the pictures!!!
Thanks to the PTFA for funding our local tree expert and to all the parents, children and school staff who lent a hand on the day!
We really look forward to seeing them flourish!
Next stop – An Orchard!
Watch this space.

Kenway Cup Runners Up

On Thursday 24th November, 12 of our Year 5/6 boys and girls took part in the Kenway Cup Tournament at Beaminster School on the 3G pitch.
Despite horrendous weather conditions, our wonderful team braved the elements and made our school proud. The team played 5 games, drew 4 and won 1. Lots of goals were scored by our children and our team finished the afternoon as runners up to Beaminster St Marys. All our children played superbly upholding our school and sporting values. Congratulations and well done to them all.

Tree Planting Workshop

We have managed to secure 60 free hedge saplings and 30 free tree saplings for our outside space.
On Wednesday 16th and Friday 18th November all children in school will be participating in tree
planting workshops with a local tree planting expert who works with schools across the county to plant
trees in school grounds. The PFTA will kindly be paying for his time.
The children have been split into mixed aged groups and, if they have siblings in school, have been
grouped together for this experience with the idea that the older children will be able to support the
younger children during the workshops.

If you are able to volunteer to help during either or both of the days or for part of the day, can you
please let the office know by Thursday 10th November. Each session will last about 45 minutes and will
involve some initial learning about trees with the leader as well as support to plant the saplings. There
will be five sessions during each of the two days – the approximate times are as follows.
Session 1 – 9.30am – 10.15am
Session 2 – 10.30am – 11.15am
Session 3 – 11.15am -12.00pm.
LUNCH – 12pm – 1pm
Session 4 – 1.15pm – 2pm
Session 5 – 2.00 – 2.45pm
We need as many easy to use trowels and narrow spades as we can get, so if you have any that you
don’t mind lending to us over the two days please can you let the office know asap so we know if we
need to buy any. If you are able to lend us any tools, please can you make sure they are clearly named
so they can be returned to their rightful owners!

This is phase one of our outdoor planting project. We have fruit trees arriving in the Spring Term so will
be calling on you to help us again after Christmas.
As part of this project we need large, clean yoghurt pots and cable ties that we can use to make name
tags to attach to each sapling so the children know which one is theirs to look after.

Can you please send any large, cleaned yoghurt pots and any spare cable ties you may have lurking in
your sheds in with your child as soon as possible. We need loads so please keep sending them in over
the next couple of weeks – we will let you know when we have enough.
Any queries or questions – please contact Miss Ives via the office: office@mosterton.dorset.sch.uk

Thanks in advance.
Julia Ives

Food Bank Donations

Dear Parents/Carers,

This year, as part of our harvest festival, we are asking for donations for the Beaminster Food Bank. In these uncertain times, more and more families are having to visit food banks, in order to provide for their families.

As a key part of the local community, it is our responsibility to support all those families that need the support. So, if you are able to help and support a local cause, please bring in any of the following:
• Tinned goods – beans, meat, fruit, vegetables
• Rice, pasta, cereal
• Lentils, beans, pulses
• Jars – jam, sauces
• Tea and coffee
• Biscuits

Donations to be brought in on 10th October. These will be collected and taken down to the food bank by the school councillors.
Regards,

Stuart Copping
